Draw Fairy Tale Characters in Photoshop
Today we have another drawing tutorial from one of our staff members: Andreea. During this tutorial you will learn how to use Burn Tool, and Dodge Tool to create wonderful designs. To create such drawings will take you a lot of time. In this PSD file (available for VIP members) you will find 280 layers to play with.
Apply for VIP to download this layered PSD file with 280 layers !!!
Open with a new document, and then you will have to make a sketch over this document. If you don’t know how to create a drawing like mine I suggest you to use a scanned photo, then with Pen Tool create the sketch like in the following image. I have a wacom tablet and for me it is very easy to create such drawings.
As you see this outline doesn’t have too much details. I will add them later. For start I will create a new layer above the background layer, and with Brush Tool I will add some color for the background.
I will start working on the face. Always when I add some details I will create a new layer. The shortcut to create a new layer is (CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+N). Please learn the keyboard shortcuts in Photoshop. It will save you tons of hours of work. With Brush Tool I will create the following drawing. I will use the following color: #d4cc6b.
I will select Burn Tool and I will create some shadows on the face.
I will create the eyes and the beard with Pen Tool.
With the same tool I will create the hair and the mustache.
I will create the eyebrow and I am finished with the face
In the PSD file I will write you the names for all layers so you can play alone with the layered PSD file. Apply for a VIP account and you will be able to download this huge layered PSD file.
I will change my foreground color to #de1a4d, and then with Brush Tool I will make the cap.
With another color I will create a small line on the hat.
With Burn Tool, and Dodge Tool I will add the final details for this hat.
I will create a new layer, and I will make a small model over the scarfs.
I am ready with the head. I will go further to create the body. One more time I will create a new layer, and on this layer I will draw the body of this character.
I will draw some dragons over the coat.
Then with Burn Tool I will add the details for the dragons.
I will select Burn Tool, and I will add some shadows.
With Dodge Tool you can create the lights over this coat.
I will create a collar.
Now I will create other drawings with Brush Tool over the arms.
With the same technique as above I will create the other parts of the coat.
Now I will create the sword. First I will use the Pen Tool to draw the sword.
As usual I will add the shadows with Burn Tool.
And at the end I will add some model over the sword.
On the back of this character I will create a yellow scarf.
I will select Burn Tool, and over this rasterized layer I will make some drawings.
Then with Dodge Tool I will add some lights.
I will draw right now the end of the belt
Again I will add the shadow and lights with Burn Tool, and Dodge Tool.
At the end of this belt I will add some tassels.
Now I will work on the hands.
After I will draw the cane, this is my result.
Now I will add create a new sketch with some waves and clouds.
With the same method I have explained during this tutorial I will draw the clouds.
And at the end I will draw also the water. I will not explain you one more time how I made the waves. In the PSD file you will have 105 different layers only for these simple waves.
I will add some minor details and this is my final result.
